Connect with BGUSY!

Shalom! If you haven’t heard about our awesome chapter of United Synagogue Youth (USY) here at Beth El, let me take a moment to introduce you to us! We are Ben Gurion United Synagogue Youth (BGUSY – pronounced Bah-Goo-See) and we welcome 9th-12th graders to join our chapter. We provide opportunities to connect with other Jewish teens and have a lot of fun at the different events we hold throughout the school year! Some events we’ve held in the past include: bowling, going to the trampoline parks, a mall scavenger hunt, Kennywood Fright Nights, lounge nights at Beth El, Sushi in the Sukkah, and movie nights – just to name a few! Overall, we have a great balance of both Jewish and secular activities and events.

In addition to local events with our chapter, we also have a lot of events with our other Pittsburgh USY chapter at Beth Shalom (like trips to Cedar Point and snow tubing!), and we also attend four different regional conventions throughout the year with the other chapters in Central Region USY (CRUSY); comprised of Jewish teens from Western PA, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana, and West Virginia. In fact, Beth El is hosting Fall Kinnus for our region from November 20th-22nd this year!

Elana_headshotMy name is Elana Barkowitz, and I’m coming into my fourth year as BGUSY’s advisor. My family has belonged to Beth El since 1995 and I was involved in BGUSY when I was in high school (10 years ago already… oy!). I live with my 90 lb. dog in Dormont, and matzah ball soup is the way to my heart! I love our community here, and I know I’m biased, but our chapter is truly the best. We have some amazing teens who lead our group and help to plan fun activities throughout the year, so if you haven’t already hung out with us, I encourage you to come to one of our events and try USY out!

We will be posting about the events we’re having and membership forms will be posted soon as well. If you have any questions about our chapter, please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]! I’m so excited for the year ahead, and if you’re not already a part of BGUSY, I hope to meet you soon!
